Haleakala Crater

This was an amazing drive up to the top of a volcano (Haleakala Crater). The road was two lanes and numerous switchbacks. At several places there is no guardrail and heart stopping when you look over the edge...gulp...

There is a tour that will take you to the top to see the sunrise and then you can bike down...lucky for me it was all booked! We did pass several bikers at various points along the way. There is a fee for the park but we didn’t have to pay...apparently the government is on a shutdown ....thanks Trump...you saved us $$$!

The trip up is about 37 miles from the junction...took us about 90 min at 30 miles/hr to get up to the top

Some of these pics are out the car window with me pointing the camera at random 'cause it was so steep! 😂😮

Sharp corners reminded me of Osooyos

Imagine 90min of roads like this!

Finally...

My photos look like I snapped them of another photo...but this is truly what it looks like! The light of the day made it difficult to focus so I had to rely on my auto settings...add in wind...

In the parking lot...

We were truly above the clouds...and the air was pretty thin

Temperature was so cold and windy...just like at home without the snow! (12° c)

Can’t believe that people like this biked to the very top! True celebration!

There is no edge...gulp

She’s on top of the world

You know when you point the camera...and you have no idea what you’re doing...and when you come back there’s a surprise...like this bird?!

We stopped for lunch in a small community. (Makawao) The restaurant was very cool as it was down an alley and served salads and sandwiches only. I had a salad with fresh mahi-mahi ...yum...Brent and Yu had crab and avacodo sandwiches...we can’t get enough of avacodo...so good. It seems really strange that everywhere you look there’s chickens running loose...even down the Main Street and in the alley where we ate lunch! Imagine walking down the street and ...oh there’s an egg! 😂😂😂

Sigh...what a great day...

Lei Making

Yu and I signed up to learn how to make leis. Brent wanted nothing to do with this adventure. There were a few guys in the class so I don’t know why he wasn’t as excited?  They are quite simple really to make and they turned out so beautiful.

We went for a long walk along the beach and in the distance ...closer to Molokai...we saw whales breaching lots! Too bad they were so far away ☹️
When Brent went for his hr long walk he saw one breach much closer to Kaanapali and not far from a paddle boarder! We did talk to them later and they admitted to being quite scared! I would be too!
